Corsets were meant to slim the waist to make a more flattering figure. But Corsets did more harm than good. With the way that the corset was positioned, the ribs where forced inward while the stomach was shoved up into the upper body. The lungs were compressed and lead to black outs,
Bustle

The Bustle was made so that the back of the dress was lifted and would give a more prominent behind. This was considered to be worn to tea time and evening wear. Over time the bustle would change forms, but this is what most desirable .
Why Women Wore Corsets
At the time, western women wanted to mimic the french womans figure. A pushed up bust with a slim waist. This followed with many medical problems, girls as young as 15 were meant to wear to the corsets.
