Lower class women didn't have much of a choice when it came to clothing. Their clothing had to withstand hard work and could not have frills upperclass women did on their clothes. These women where usually single because they hadn't married or their husband had died, causing them to slip into the ranks of lower class.
A photo of poor factory women, notice that most of them are of old age, not really fit for the harsh conditions of a factory. Possibly because their husbands have died and they must go into work to put food on the table.
Most poor women had to make their clothing out of cheap wool or tattered rags. They wore mostly dark clothing because if they wore lighter colors, stains could be easily spotted. Stains could not be well seen on dark cloth.
Another way poor women dressed was in the form of prostitution. Women who didn't want to work often resorted to prostitution. Often wearing revealing clothing that showed the chest, which was not favorable during the time.
