Men's upper class wore top hats because it was a symbol to capitalism and the business world. But it officially became a wealthy fashion statement when Prince Albert started wearing them in 1850.
Mens fashion hasn't changed much over the years, men only changed their outfits if they where going hunting or going to the theatre. They expressed their wealthiness in a different manner other than clothes instead. Such as clean white gloves, pocket watches and handkerchiefs.

Pocket watches were another symbol of status because of how expensive they where. It was common for them to get stolen during the night and in the morning there would be listings for cheap pocket watches in the newspaper.
